History of Azle, TX

In 1846, a young doctor named James Azle Steward first settled in the area in a small cabin. Steward donated land for the town site and schools, requesting it be named Azle after his middle name. The initial economy of the area was agriculture. The main crops were wheat, corn, cotton, peanuts and sorghum. Fruits were also a mainstay of the region. Although nearby Fort Worth saw a massive increase in population during the dawn of the railroad, Azle maintained a slow and steady growth throughout the city’s history. By the 1900s, dairy farming took a prominent role due to the growing demand from nearby Fort Worth. Agriculture thrived until the 1930s when electricity finally arrived. Wheat and corn fields turned to housing developments as industrialization and manufacturing became more popular. By 1957, the rural community finally incorporated as a city.
