When to Replace Your Air Conditioner

When you replace the air conditioning system in your Dallas, Texas, home, one replacement could be less expensive than frequent repairs to an existing system over time. Recent technological advances have made new systems much more energy-efficient, enabling you to earn back the money you spent on initial installation costs through lower utility bills. If you have an old air conditioner, high utility bills, or an uncomfortable home because of air quality, you could save money and help the environment by replacing your system.

Your System Is More Than 10 Years Old

Most air conditioners last for 10 to 15 years. You can keep your home comfortable and use less energy with a new unit that has a higher SEER — Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio than your old unit. You also won’t have to worry about a breakdown during a hot summer.

Older systems use a refrigerant called R-22 that harms the ozone layer. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, manufacturers must stop producing this refrigerant by 2020. The new refrigerant, R-410A, is more environmentally friendly, but it won’t work with units designed for R-22 — at least not without some modifications which could prove costly. In addition, as R-22 becomes more scarce, the price increases.

High Utility Bills

Your air conditioning system could be showing signs that it’s nearing the end of its operating life or it could have a problem that needs repair. When air conditioners fail to run correctly, they may use more energy than needed, and you’re likely to see that inefficiency in your utility bills. Leaky ductwork and gaps in your insulation can also contribute to greater energy usage.

An Uncomfortable Home

Warm areas in your home or less cool air in general, could be signs your system isn’t working well. Since air conditioning systems also work as dehumidifiers, your home may feel extra warm and stuffy when your system isn’t operating at peak performance.
