Save Money and Energy with AC Upgrades

Is your air conditioning system over 10 years old? Does your equipment need repairs each year just to stay up and running? You can save money and energy by upgrading your AC system to an energy efficient unit. In fact, you may save enough money on your energy bills over a few cooling seasons to pay for the installation.

The SEER Rating for AC

The SEER is a standardized rating system that evaluates the energy efficiency of central air systems. The higher the SEER rating, the less energy the unit must consume to produce cooled air. In 2006, the federal government raised the minimum SEER allowed for HVAC equipment sold in the U.S. As of 2006, all central air conditioners sold in the U.S. must have a minimum SEER of 13.

Your old air conditioner may be costing you more than you think. An air conditioning unit that is over 10 years old likely has a SEER of 9 or less. If your AC unit has a SEER in the single digits, you are probably paying high energy bills to keep your home cool. Upgrading to a standard efficiency unit with a minimum SEER of 13 will dramatically reduce your monthly costs to cool your home. Upgrading from SEER 9 to SEER 13 can save you as much as 30 percent on your electric bills. By upgrading to a high efficiency unit, you can save as much as 50 percent on energy costs.

Energy Saving Features

Save money and energy with an AC unit with new energy saving features. New energy-saving technologies have been developed over the past decade that further improve AC efficiency.

Variable Speed Air Handlers

Air conditioning units with variable speed air handlers run at two different speeds according to demand. Most of the time, the air handlers run at the lower speed, conserving energy and keeping the home comfortable. When demand rises, the air handlers switch to high speed. Conventional air conditioning systems only run at one speed. Additionally, when the air handlers shift from low to high speed, the unit shifts gradually so there is no blast of cold air. Variable speed air handlers also remove humidity from the air much more effectively than single speed units.

Zone Controls

Air conditioning units with zone control provide you with complete command over your home’s cooling comfort. With zone controls, you can set the climate in one zone, and then set another temperature in another zone. You can turn the air conditioning off in zones when they are not occupied. Zone controls make the air conditioning system even more energy efficient by enabling you to cool just one or two zones at a time.
