Choosing an HVAC Contractor: 7 Best Practices

Choosing an HVAC contractor for your home doesn’t have to be difficult. The trick is to know what to look for so you don’t make a mistake. If you want to get ahead of the game and make your life a little bit easier, we suggest you follow these seven best practices when you’re in the market for a new contractor:

  • Ask people you know – If anyone you know, such as a family member, friend, co-worker or neighbor, is already using a contractor they’re happy with, start there. It could make your search short and sweet.
  • Inquire about references – Any confident technician will happily hand over a list of references for you to contact. Ask each about his or her experience with the contractor. Be as thorough as you’d like.
  • Check for licensing and insurance requirements – Contact your local government to find out which license and insurance requirements exist, then check with the contractor to ensure they have what’s needed.
  • Be prepared for a home evaluation – If your new contractor truly knows what he or she is doing, one of the first things that will be done is a visit to your home where the technician can ascertain your home’s energy efficiency, ductwork, etc. for any possible problems or needed improvements.
  • Stick to Energy Star certified equipment – If possible, only allow a contractor to install equipment that carries the Energy Star label. This will ensure solid efficiency and performance of any new heating or cooling system, which will lower your energy usage.
  • Ask your specials – Contractors often run special discounts throughout the year. It doesn’t hurt to ask, but you can start with their website, if you prefer.
  • Get your contract in writing – It’s important that you get everything in writing before work begins, and be as detailed as possible to avoid future issues.
